Kooee! Grass Fed Jerky

kooee-jerky

My husband is a huge fan of chilli and has been exploring how hot he can handle it. We were looking forward to trying the two spicy flavours of Kooee! Jerky.

We rated the Habenero chilli as 4.5 out 5 hot, while the smoked chipotle was rated a more moderate 2.5 out of 5 hot. This Tasmanian-based company makes beef jerky in other flavours, like classic sea salt and native mountain pepperberry. They use Tasmanian beef which is raised free-range and 100% grass-fed, which might explain why the beef jerky is so tasty.

The Kooee! beef jerky is a high protein, paleo-friendly and gluten free snack. It doesn’t contain soy, gluten, added sugar, preservatives or GMO products like some of the jerky you will find in the supermarket.

I love eating jerky and this one is definitely moreish. I found myself finishing a whole packet in one sitting! The slices of dehydrated beef offer a nice balance between the spicy chipotle, coconut aminos, apple cider vinegar and sea salt.

The jerky is healthy and convenient to carry around with you, so you could put it in your backpack for bushwalking or take it to work. Each 30g packet contains 15g of protein. The meat is easy to chew through and bite off because it is cut against the grain. You won’t feel like you are chewing like a cow!

Kooee! Beef Jerky is produced in small amounts and is sold at the Hobart Farmers Markets and Launceston Farmers Markets. It’s lucky that you can order Kooee! Beef Jerky from their online shop at www.kooeesnacks.com.au.

Product Review: Naturally Nood bars

Naturally Nood bars

I am currently on the hunt for a good convenient healthy snack bar.

Naturally Nood bars are produced by the well-known Australian company Sanitarium.

I packed them in my lunchbox to have for a morning and afternoon snack. The reality is I ate them both at the same time because I was so hungry and they were too delicious!

The first one I tried was called Cocoa Lamington and it contained all natural ingredients like dates, cashews, coconut, raisins, and cocoa. It was all chocolate to me.

The second one was just as yummy and called  Cocoa-Orange-Tango. It was packed with ingredients such as cashews, dates, orange juice, cocoa, apple juice, apple fibre, and vegetable oil.

The good points about these bars are that they contain zero added sugar, they aren’t baked and there are no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives.

I bought mine from the local supermarket so they are easy to find. They contain a little under 20 carbs.

Just be a little careful of the hard nuts and eat mindfully. If you read the fine print you’ll discover they are made in Thailand.

Enjoy in moderation, as they like to say.

Product Review: Paleo Crunch bar

Paleo Crunch Raw Cacao bar

My local greengrocer stocks these new Paleo Crunch bars on their counter. They are made in the Czech Republic for a Swedish company. I bought one to try for under a fiver.

They contain 100 per cent raw organic dates, cacao, almonds, cashew, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, vanilla and Himalayan salt. The good thing is they are gluten-free and a healthier alternative to chocolate bars.

Product Review: VOSS still water

voss-water-bottle.jpg
VOSS still water (watercolour pencil) by Emma Crameri

In an effort drink something a little more healthy than soft drinks and juices, I wanted to try VOSS water. It comes in a heavy glass bottle in two different sizes. I found it originally at the health food shop and then saw it stocked in Woolworth’s. As we had the car and could carry it home we decided to give it a try.

The still water is made up of Sodium 6, Calcium  5, Magnesium 1, Chloride 12, Fluoride 0.1 and Sulfate 5. The sparkling water is made up of Sodium 90, Calcium 5, Magnesium 1, Chloride 12, Fluoride 0.1 and Sulfate  5.

I love the taste of VOSS water. It is even better infused with slices of fruit. Why not give this artisan water from Norway a try.

Review: Schkinny Maninny

smjuice-green

I was able to try Schkinny Maninny over two days and I would recommend starting on the weekend. If you have always wanted to try a juice cleanse then this might appeal to you.

smjuice-salad

The freshly squeezed juices, soup and salad arrived in a small esky. They were all packaged in plastic, so you can rinse them and recycle. The only real cooking I had to do was reheating through the soup.

smjuice-soup
You are able to specify your dietary requirements when you order. I liked most of the juices, but thought the soup needed more seasoning. I would have liked the juices to be full of green vegetables, but the fruit based ones were yummy because of the fructose content.

If you can afford the cost, I would recommend trying it once every few months when you are on holidays and relaxed.

Review: Natural Instinct facial products

 natural-instinct2

I have been using a couple of the Natural Instinct products for my face. They are an Australian made natural skin and hair care brand, which are formulated with botanically-derived ingredients, certified organic extracts and pure essential oils. There are no nasties in their products, so they are grey-water safe, and products are not tested on animals.

Daily mosituriser – sinks in nicely, and is not greasy like some. It smells of jojoba and rosehips, and contain B5.

Facial scrub – the right texture and is not too grainy. My face felt clean afterwards and it contains jojoba and walnut.

Foaming and cream cleanser – Both satisfying products. The foaming cleanser lathers to a light foam and is scented with lavender and rosehip. The cream cleanser is scented with jojoba and witch hazel.

Clarifying toner – left my face toned and finished. It smells citrusy and refreshing of rosewater, witch hazel and orange flower.

What I like about these products all the products are free of sulphates, petrochemicals, parabens, PEGs and mineral oils. There are also no artificial colours or fragrances.

Thank you Natural Instinct for allowing me to trial these products.

Taste test: Goat Pie Guy pies

goat-pie-guy

We have tried Goat Pie Guy pies once before, but we demolished them for breakfast one day at the Mitchelton Farmers markets. I didn’t realise how good they would be. When we spotted them today at the Eagle Farm Markets we knew we had to get some cold to have later for lunch.

I choose the Deluxe Goat Pie, which is their signature pie – rich, tender slow cooked goat meat, infused with honey and thyme, topped with a port & redcurrant jus. The chunks of meat were delicious and sauce just right. The crust nice and short.

Matt choose the Himalayan Goat Pie, which has tender slow cooked goat meat in a rich Nepalese curry with ginger, tomatoes and fragrant spices. He said there were generous chucks of meat and a perfect balance of chilli. A convenient way to eat a really good dry-spiced curry.

The Goat Pie Guy uses Boer goat meat and there’s a talent to cooking goat so it stays nice and tender. Look out for Goat Pie Guy at your local markets.

Highly recommended.

Taste test: Wensley’s Cornish Pasty

wensley-cornish-pasty

Wensley’s make a fantastic Cornish pasty. They have crumbly butter puff pastry with a perfect combination of traditional fillings. The inside is made from beef, potato, onion, turnips and swede with a touch of pepper. We’ve eaten the real thing in Cornwell, so we can assure you that these pasties are authentic.

We also like their sausages and pork pies.

Wensley’s are available in Brisbane from the Britain on the Bayside, Moggil Farmers Market, Currumbin Palm Beach Market and various other stockists.

Highly recommended.

Taste test: Melinda’s Gluten Free Goodies Decadent Red Velvet Cake

Melinda's Red Velvet Cake

I decided it was time to try the Decadent Red Velvet Cake from Melinda’s Gluten Free Goodies for a belated father’s day.

I followed the instructions on the back of the packet to a tee, and was rewarded with a light reddy-brown coloured cake. Instead of making the suggested cream cheese icing, I made a glaze with coconut oil and icing sugar, which complemented the flavours really well.

red velvet cake

The cake was served with strawberries and vanilla ice cream. The red velvet cake was moist and delicious. It received positive feedback from all the family members who tasted it. My sister-in-law said “She couldn’t believe it was gluten free. It tastes that good.”

Available from Coles, Woolworths, IGA, Independents, and various online stores.

Taste test: Melinda’s Gluten-free goodies Heavenly Chocolate Fudge Brownie

chocolate brownie

We were lucky to receive a packet of Heavenly Chocolate Fudge Brownie from Melinda’s Gluten Free Goodies to trial. I was wanting to make something sweet for afternoon tea and these were the answer.

The lactose-free chocolate was morish and I had to stop myself from eating the chips! I must admit I made a bit of a mess melting the chocolate and butter in the microwave, so next time I would do this on the stove top. Alternatively I’d suggest checking the mixture every minute and the recipe on the back of the packed does suggest this.

It was then easy sailing as I mixed 2 eggs with the brownie premix, which I then combined with the chocolate and butter mixture.

I didn’t line my cake tin as suggested, but I did use a non-stick tin sprayed with oil. I popped it in the preheated oven and 25 minutes later it was done. You can leave the cake in less time for a more fudgy result, but I left them in for the full amount.

The result was gooey, moist chocolate brownies, with no funny after-taste that you sometimes get with gluten free products. They have kept well for a few days, although best eaten on the day of cooking.

It’s not hard to see how these become bestsellers.

Available from Coles, Woolworths, IGA, Independents, and various online stores.
